Sight Numbers

Sight numbers are basically numbers you see through your eyes.  This is a skill your child can obtain using memory and practice.  I think this skill is not only for toddlers to practice, but also for older kids.

1.  Sight Numbers using your hands

When looking at the image above, most adults see the # 6.  Ask a toddler who doesn't know anything about sight numbers, they may say 1, or 5.  Some kids like my son, didn't grasp the other hand. His response was 5.  So we practiced.  I would simply hold up fingers and tell him how many.  We would also count my fingers together.  I recommend spending 10 mins on this a day.  Again, we don't want them to cram it, but learn.  After some time, your child will recognize numbers through sight.

2. Act it out

Acting numbers out can be so much fun.  Kids are super active when they are toddlers, so utilize their energy!

Call out a number, let's say 6, and have them hop 6 times.  This is good right before nap or bed time!  LOL.  There are numerous of ways to have fun with this.  Ex. Bounce a ball, kick, throw.  You get the picture.  In the pic below, I have Amir count steps coming down.

If your child is much older and is reading, practice number sight words!  Ex.  One, two, three, four, five. The older your child get, there are always ways to challenge them.  Building this skill will help them become better readers.

3.  Fill in the Blank

This is an awesome fun way to introduce sight numbers.  Write down a sight numbers on an index card in order, but turn one over or leave it out.  Have your child fill in the blank or guess the missing number.  I haven't tried this with Amir, but I hope to soon.

If your child isn't writing yet, that is perfectly fine,  fill in the number for them. This is a way you can be a good model in writing for them. :)  If your child is writing, this is an awesome way to challenge them to write in each numbe…

I love using different learning activities to teach.  Every child is different and you never know what will spark their interest, therefore trying different activities is a win win!  The goal is to keep them engaged and have fun while learning.  Be sure to check back at this post.  I will add more methods next week. :)
