Number Recognition

Before, teaching our son how to count, we had to make sure he knew the basics...NUMBERS!  Below, will tell you what we used to teach him numbers 1-12  We are currently  learning 13-20.  We are using these same methods.  As time progress, I will add more learning activities, so make sure you check back in!

1. Flashcards

I am old school, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it!  Try them out, but remember to break them into groups.  So try numbers 1-3, then once he/she has mastered them, move forward to 4,5, and 6.  Always go back to review!

Disregard the age! We started working on numbers with Amir at 1.

2. Laminated Number Posters

You can get these from Amazon or most toy stores.  If you follow me, you will remember how I mentioned that I had them posted in my son's room when he was a newborn.  LOL!  Any who, it is good to have visuals posted around the house for them to see.  Try it out.

3.  Point out Numbers

When you take your child out, point out numbers.  We are practically surrounded by them.  Point them out and have your child point them out to you.  :)

4. Number Book

Print out Numbers, laminate, and make it into a book/pamphlet.  This is always nice to have in the car or during breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  Get you one of those 3 ring binders and there you have it, your child's 1st number book!

5.  Wooden Age Blocks

You may already have this at home.  You know, those cute wooden blocks that tracks the age of your baby, yeah those things.  One day, we stumbled upon an awesome learning activity where I rolled the block and I would ask my son, "where is the number 2?"  At times, I would even sing the question into a song. Have fun with it.

6.  Touch and Count-

Get an old egg carton and write in the numbers in each compartment with a black marker. In the pic below, I actually wrote the numbers on stickers.  I quickly found out that wasn't such a great idea.  Amir just took them all out! LOL.  Buy some table tennis balls, and write numbers on each one.  Last step, work with your child in matching the numbers and placing each ball in the right egg carton compartment.  This activity is super easy to setup.  This is an awesome way to teach number recognition and counting. I've learned activities that involves high participation from my son works best when learning a new activity.  Try this out and let me know if you have any questions.

7.  Melissa & Doug Self-Correcting Wooden Number Puzzles With Storage Box (40 pcs)

We had a fun time working with these wooden number puzzles.  My son loves puzzles.  As soon as I knew this, I thought to myself, how could I turn this in to a learning activity and wallah... I introduce you to wooden number puzzles.  We work on touch counting the objects on each wooden number piece, we go over the name of the objects, and we match each puzzle appropriately.  Another idea!  Use only the pieces with numbers on them, scatter them on the floor, and sing the words, "Where is 9?"  Have your child point out the correct number.  You can assist them and eventually, they will get the hang of it.  So, yes, this puzzle is mainly for matching numbers, but as I listed, you can teach your child so much more.  Get more for your buck!!!
